From the Studio/The beginning of a Collection...
Hello from Melinda! A little look at what is on my table today.🖤
This little watercolor is actually the beginning of something much bigger, a new floral collection for quilting cotton! When I begin a collection, I usually start with what is called the Hero. The main design that sets the feeling for everything that follows. I want it to be a painting I absolutely love. From there, I'll create 5-7 coordinating designs, pulling little elements, colors and ideas from the Hero and allowing the collection to grow naturally. This one will be a mix of watercolor florals and simple block print inspired designs.. two things I love very much.
A little Studio secret: One of my favorite things about watercolor is building color through layers of transparent washes rather than mixing everything on the pallet first. I let one wash dry and gently layer another over it. The colors underneath still shine through, creating beautiful depth and variation. The same idea applies to building a collection. Some patterns get to be the star, while the quieter ones support them and give the collection room to breathe. Once these designs are complete they become more than paintings on my studio table. Surface designs can find their way onto fabric, paper, home goods, and accessories. And I'm going to show you how that happens. You'll get to watch this collection come to life at Ninna House Studio - from these first watercolor strokes, to the coordinating patterns, color choices and finished collection... And eventually onto products you can find right inside the boutique at Farmhouse Table Coffee Co.
