I just learned that someone I called a friend has passed away from something that has nearly taken my life on a few occasions. I met Richard Simmons when I worked at Cherry Capital Airport around 2006. He flew into Traverse City to work as a consultant to the physical education programs at the public schools.
I was turned around at the register when I heard his voice for the first time at the shop. I instantly recognized his voice, turned around, and gave him a smile. He was very kind. We talked for several minutes while he got to know me. As he made his way to the departure gate, I noticed that he gave anyone that approached him a hug. He was never stand-off-ish where so many celebrities are. He connected with people, and never forgot nor took for granted the affect he could have with a smile, words of encouragement and a hug.
The next year, he came straight to the shop upon arrival. Richard called me by name and asked where he could get a good breakfast downtown in the morning. (I quickly figured out that anyone's name that Richard wanted to remember was written in a book by his assistant so Richard could call that person by their name in the future. Seriously, who cares enough to do that anymore?) When he was leaving, the next day, he told me that he loved my recommendation, that he only had half of the pastie, gave the other half to his assistant, and joked that he could never forgive me for introducing him to something so evilly delicious.
The following year, he asked if I would join him for dinner upon his arrival. I apologized that my work schedule wouldn't allow it that week, but we should try again the next time.
There wouldn't be a "next time," as I had to switch jobs with an impending sale of the shop. Soon after, Richard retired from the public life. As many of his quirks and eccentricities became gossip news, I was a proud defender of the person that I became friends.
Richard Simmons was the wealthiest, while being the most generous person I have ever known. Rest in peace, my friend.
Richard Simmons, a fitness icon known for his "Sweatin' to the Oldies" workout videos, has died one day after celebrating his 76th birthday.
