The basil was never allowed to flower. He walked that row every evening taking the tops off with a thumbnail. 🌿

Once basil goes to flower the plant decides it is finished, and the leaves turn thin and bitter and the whole thing starts shutting down for the season. So you pinch out the top before it can. Do it every few days and one plant will feed a kitchen from June to the first cold night. Miss a week in July and you have lost it.

He did not explain this. He just did it, in the ten minutes between coming home and washing up, still in his work pants, and if you were standing there he would hand you the pinched bud and go on down the row. You were supposed to be watching the hand. 🍅

That is how most of it got taught. Nobody sat you down. You either paid attention or you did not.

Tonight’s Board! Come on in and grab summer flavors while you can! 🍅
Throwing out feelers for a “Sunday Supper” on a Sunday. Would be reservations only from 2:00 to 4:00, limited to the first 100 people only, it’s the only way to host it on a Sunday. It’d be on a bears game day but you could request the lounge area to watch the end of game.
Would be like the old days growing up, Sundays are for pots on the stove simmering away with goodness! 🇮🇹😉

Our Summer Board tonight, I know it’s pretty much the same during the summer weekdays but you can’t mess with great flavors when they’re available! Took down the basil yesterday, it wasn’t doing so good but it provided many smiles through the season. 🇮🇹🍷
