Dominick ran the liquor, maggie ran the restaurant, and together Capone’s Benld booze gang kept the highway hot.
From Maggie’s 1926 blind pig to the legendary eras of Mick and Mary, this joint has survived a century of true American grit. We sat right in the center of a historical storm where local moonshiners, the Benld booze gang, and Frank Zito’s syndicate moved Capone’s booze right through our backyard.
We’ve spent countless hours using incredible local resources, like John Ubben and Jim Marcacci’s “Benld and the Booze Gang,” to “connect the dots.” This book finally unraveled how our restaurant was linked directly to the massive Benld operation that was estimated at 3.2 million in todays dollars of liquor in the 1920s. Dominick Enrietta paid the ultimate price to keep this haven alive, and a century later, that fierce spirit remains unchanged.
This 4th of July, we’re celebrating 100 years of Route 66 history, the rule-breakers who built it, and the definitive work that brought their story to light.
