Nearly a decade after Bryce's Cafeteria served its last plate in Texarkana, the name is back on a cafeteria door. This time it's at Northlake Elementary in Lake Highlands, where a granddaughter of founder Bryce Lawrence won the naming rights at the school's first-ever PTA auction.
Goodwin Lawrence McCutcheon , a 2001 Pleasant Grove graduate, and her husband Brad, a Plano firefighter, bid on the cafeteria as a way to honor the family business her grandfather opened in downtown Texarkana in 1931. The timing made it sweeter: their daughter Bryce, named after her grandfather and great-grandfather, is in fifth grade and finishing her last year at the school.
"Just a little bit of Bryce's Cafeteria to keep it going," she said.
Brad, who married into the family, said the best part has been introducing Bryce's to people in Dallas who never made the stop off I-30 — and hearing the stories from those who did. "You mention you're married into the Bryce family and hear their stories about Bryce's Cafeteria and the smiles that it brings to people's faces," he said. "It's really neat."
Bryce's Cafeteria operated for 86 years, moving from downtown to Mall Drive in 1989 before closing April 30, 2017.
