Every year on this day, we try to sit with a different piece of the story — this year, we're thinking about the helpers.

Twenty-five years ago, more than 300 specialized search and rescue dogs went into the wreckage at Ground Zero.

All The Of These Brave Pups And Their Handlers Are Listed In Sequence To Match Their Photos.

Riley, a Golden Retriever with FEMA's Pennsylvania Task Force 1, became the face of the search — the photo of him carried in a harness over the wreckage is one of the most enduring images of that week. He worked nights through the debris, formally trained to find survivors, and later became a comfort dog for the exhausted crews around him.

Trakr, a German Shepherd from Halifax, Canada, worked with handler James Symington, a Canadian police officer on K-9 security duty in New York. He searched for two days straight and is credited with finding the last survivor pulled alive from the rubble, 27 hours in. He was later named number 6 on TIME's Top 10 Heroic Animals.

Apollo, an NYPD K-9 handled by Peter Davis, was the first search-and-rescue dog on scene — arriving at the South Tower just fifteen minutes after it fell. Already one of the top-rated rescue dogs of the '90s, he worked eighteen-hour days for weeks straight, and was later honored at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.

Bretagne, a Golden Retriever just two years old, deployed with handler Denise Corliss and Texas Task Force 1 for ten days as the mission shifted from rescue to recovery. She went on to serve during Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Ivan, then retired to become a fire department goodwill ambassador and a reading-assistance dog at a local elementary school.
