The history of Craig's Shave Ice dates all the way back to a family vacation to Seattle, Washington in 1995. Growing up in Yankton, South Dakota, most of my friends were either Minnesota Twins fans or Kansas City Royals fans but not me. I, for whatever weird reason, decided to become a Seattle Mariners fan. Living in the midwest, I didn't get to see them play very often on television and when I did, it was super late at night. So my parents planned a family vacation to Seattle, Washington for my 11th birthday. While we were in Seattle, I remember walking out of the marina and seeing a person selling shave ice on the side of the street. This would be the first time I would have shave ice, and I loved it! I remember telling my step-father that selling shave ice, like the street vendor, would be a cool job. My step-father remembered my words and one year later, an opportunity would presented itself.
While on yet another family vacation, this time in the Black Hills, my step-father happened to overhear a distributor for a shave ice company trying to convince the resort's poolside concession stand to sell shave ice. Now I should note that my step-father was always an entrepreneurial person, starting a few businesses in his life. When the two finished talking my parents had a business proposal for me, as they remembered what I had said the year before. They said they would help me get started by "loaning" me the money but in return I would have to pay them back and give the business a three year commitment. Beings that I was 12 years old, all I could think about was how awesome it would be to eat shave ice whenever I wanted. So, I said yes!
Every summer since 1996, I have been going around to different events and festivals in the midwest selling shave ice. In that time, Craig's Shave Ice has gone through some changes, from different flavors and ice shavers, to expanding into the world of mini donuts. However, no matter the changes that have been made one thing has always and will always remain the same is, our promise to serve the best products at a reasonable price.
