🚨 SCAM ALERT: The Tazewell County Chamber of Commerce wants you to be alert & aware, this is happening right here & more often than you’d think. Please share 🚨
Scammers are getting smarter, sneakier, and more convincing—and they’re targeting local individuals and businesses right here in our community. These aren’t amateurs; they’re highly trained criminals using sophisticated tricks to steal your money and information. Stay alert!
🔹 Tech Pop-Ups & Fake Security Alerts – A message suddenly appears on your computer, MacBook, or phone claiming your device is infected and urging you to call a “help” number. DO NOT CALL! This is a scam designed to get remote access to your device and bank account.
🔹 Facebook Impersonation Scams – You get a message from a trusted friend asking for your phone number or a “code” for some reason. It’s not them! Their account has been hacked, and the scammer is trying to reset your accounts.
🔹 Spoofed Bank Calls & Fake Fraud Alerts – Your caller ID says it’s your bank, and they claim your account is compromised. They even know personal details about you. But then, they tell you to wire money overseas, buy gift cards, or “verify” your PIN. RED FLAG! Banks NEVER ask for this. Hang up and call the bank directly.
🔹 The “Don’t Call the Police” Trick – If someone tells you not to contact the police, your bank, or a family member, that’s a massive red flag. Scammers try to isolate you so you won’t verify their claims.
🔹 Fake Job Offers & Check Deposit Scams – You apply for a job online and get “hired” instantly. Then they send you a check and ask you to send money back for “supplies” or “fees.” The check is fake, and you’re out the money.
🔹 QR Code & Fake Invoice Scams – Scammers are sending fake invoices or QR codes that take you to fraudulent payment sites. If you get an unexpected bill, call the company directly to confirm before paying.
🔹 Package Delivery & Fake Refund Scams – You get a text or email saying your package can’t be delivered or you’re owed a refund. The link takes you to a fake site that steals your personal info.
