This is MY immigrant story. My parents were born in Cuba, I am first generation Cubana Americana. My oarents and grandparents fled a communist regime they came to this country for freedom and an opportunity to make a better and am safer life for themselves and pave a way for me and my children and grandchildren. They had to work harder, later, better for less pay. They had to learn a new language a new culture a new way of life but never forgot who they were. They were good decent hardworking people who above all loved their families. They did not want (not ever got) a hand out, or special treatment, or a free ride/meal. All they wanted was a chance to prove they deserved to be here. They instilled that immigrant mental in me; you have to work harder than the rest, be smarter, more efficient, show uo earlier work later, earn your place at the table. I pass than down to my children. The immigrant story is beautiful, it’s of hope, and sacrifice, survival but mostly love. Keep telling your story. Be proud of who you are and where you came from, your people fought to give you a chance to speak your truth and live your dream. Do not live in fear. Be the voice for those who cannot speak.
