Today, The Chocolate Dandies, SoMo Playhouse and E. Marie Enterprises proudly recognize Global Black Theatre Day.
September 17 honors the anniversary of the first public performance at the African Grove Theatre in 1821, recognized as the first known Black professional theatre in the United States.
This day is about more than history. It is a global day of solidarity, service, celebration, and continued support for Black theatres, Black artists, Black stories, and the spaces that make those stories possible.
We honor those who built the stage before us, support those creating now, and continue building opportunities for the generations coming next.
