New Sammy's was destroyed by the Almeda Fire Sept.8, 2020. Vernon passed away March 8, 2022. The “1-2 punch” from the fire and Vernon’s illness and death are so very sad and painful. But for me and for the many people who returned to the restaurant time after time, year after year, who knew and appreciated Vernon’s gifts, it’s really about the 32 years before. From a lot like nothing he created a unique atmosphere of welcome, where his personal charm, taste, and dedication to promoting the pleasures of food and wine with friends gave us all a special place. It’s about the 43 years of our marriage, Sammy, and you, who kept coming back for what it was. And it’s about the kindness and support given in so many ways after the fire by “friends of the restaurant”, that attest to his accomplishments.
