Peaks and Pints is a brew-fueled lodge in the heart of Basecamp Proctor in Northend Tacoma. It’s a craft beer and cider taproom where 21 and older brew nerds can wave their geek flags and keep waving them all the way home with filled growlers, a bottle shop with a broad and deep selection of craft beer in bottles and cans, and a eatery with tasty sandwiches, salads and appetizers.

Everybody’s doing it.

“Beer Pressure” stacks pastrami, provolone, beer mustard, mayo, red onion, tomato, and arugula on French bread, with Roasted Red Pepper & Gouda Bisque applying additional creamy persuasion. Bitburger Premium Pils brings the crisp German counterargument: lively carbonation, a touch of malt sweetness, and that clean, lingering hop bitterness slicing through pastrami, mayo, and double-cheese richness while making very good friends with mustard and onion.

The first Peaks and Pints Proctor Pumpkin Pandemonium Flight of 2026 begins with pumpkin behaving somewhat normally.

Then things happen.

• Evil Twin Our Most Popular Pumpkin — classic pumpkin
• Elysian Punkuccino — coffee
• New Belgium Atomic Pumpkin — chile peppers
• Abomination Brewing Forbidden Pumpkin — 9.3% milkshake IPA

So, naturally:

The kittens seize the patch.
The pumpkin behaves itself.

“Pear cider” sounds simple right up until you pour five of them.

This week’s Peaks & Pints Monday Pear & Perry Cider Flight travels from delicate Asian pear and bubbly apple-pear to Yorkshire refinement, raspberry brambles, and gnarly English perry pears with enough tannin to frighten the fruit bowl.

Five glasses later, “pear cider” isn’t the answer.

“The Gouda Majority” has the votes.

Turkey, bacon, Gouda, yellow mustard, mayo, onion, and spring mix convene on French bread, while Roasted Red Pepper & Gouda Bisque quietly introduces even more Gouda legislation. Dutchess Ales Ketzer Helles keeps the chamber civilized with biscuit malt, wildflower honey, citrus zest, alpine herbs, and peppercorn, its soft carbonation refreshing the bacon, mustard, and creamy cheese between bites and spoonfuls.

Tacoma did not throw one Water Carnival and come to its senses.

Beginning in 1947, the Tacoma Athletic Commission turned Commencement Bay into an annual summer stage: speedboats, water skis, packed docks, spray flying beneath the decks of the ship-shaped Top of the Ocean.

By 1950, they’d added a trapeze.

Naturally.

Today we raise five glasses to the second annual carnival, held Aug. 29, 1948:
