The Tanabata story (七夕), also called the Star Festival, is one of Japan’s most beloved traditional legends. It originates from a Chinese folktale but has been adapted into a uniquely Japanese story about love, separation, and reunion.
🌌 The Story of Tanabata
Long ago, there was a beautiful princess named Orihime (the Weaving Princess). She was the daughter of Tentei, the Sky King, and lived by the Milky Way (called Amanogawa in Japanese). Orihime’s job was to weave beautiful cloth for the gods. She worked so hard that she had no time to meet anyone or fall in love, and she became very lonely.
Seeing his daughter’s sadness, Tentei arranged for her to meet a kind and hardworking young man named Hikoboshi (the Cowherd Star), who tended celestial cattle on the other side of the Milky Way.
💫 When they met, Orihime and Hikoboshi fell deeply in love and soon got married.
💔 The Problem
After their marriage, however, the two became so happy that they stopped doing their work:
•
Orihime neglected her weaving
•
Hikoboshi ignored his cattle
This angered Tentei, as their duties were important to the heavens.
🌠 The Separation
As punishment, the Sky King separated the lovers, placing them on opposite sides of the Milky Way so they could never meet.
Orihime was heartbroken and cried so much that her father took pity on her. He finally agreed to let them meet again—but only once a year, on the 7th day of the 7th month (July 7).
🐦 The Annual Reunion
On that special night, if the weather is clear, a flock of magpies forms a bridge across the Milky Way so Orihime and Hikoboshi can cross and reunite.
But if it rains 🌧️, the river becomes too full, and the lovers must wait another entire year to see each other again.
