Sandwich Starr started as a pipe dream that would allow us to produce the kind of sandwiches Trey grew up with and longed for, operating out of the kitchen at Edison City Alehouse, whose owners now operate . But, in addition, we wanted to create a business that supported people and the community. We wanted to have a space where the employees were paid well, we could showcase other small businesses in the area, and we could have a place where people could be and enjoy their time, without worrying about money.
And we did.
Our employees were paid at least $20 an hour. We worked with other amazing local businesses to showcase their products, highlighting the delicious things this city has to offer. We made good food, with quality ingredients and did our best to keep our prices as low as possible. We even hosted free events, consistently, for as long as we could.
But with the economy the way that it is, the costs of running a small business are astronomical and we made it even harder for ourselves with those goals. We just couldn’t get enough people through the doors. We would consistently hear from our regulars how surprised they were by our empty lobby or free weekly events with no one turning out and honestly, we find it hard to blame anyone for that. Time and money are in short supply right now in our communities.
We take solace in the fact that we did all that we could. We worked hard. Our team worked hard. Long hours and pulling out our hair allowed us to create something great, even if it didn’t last.
We don’t know what the future will hold for Sandwich Starr, but Trey and Megan will always be part of this community and give our support to the people around us. You will see us around.
We were so proud to be here. Thank you.
