How to Build a Better Smoothie✨🌱🥤

A well-made smoothie can be both tasty and healthy. The key to building a better smoothie is finding the right balance of vegetables, fruit, protein, and healthy fat. Here are three key areas to focus on to build a nourishing smoothie that promotes health:

Protein 🥜🥛:
Helps slow the digestion process and leave you feeling fuller, longer. Without protein, your smoothie breaks down quickly, and you’re going to be hungry again not long after drinking it. If you want your smoothie to substitute for a meal, it’s important to add a protein like nut butter, Greek yogurt, protein powder, chia seeds, flax seeds, or h**p seeds to help slow down the digestion process.

Fruits and Veggies 🥬🥒🍎:
Avoid added sugars. Stay away from sugars in your smoothie, including fruit juice. The fiber from whole fruits and veggies can help keep you full and satisfied and feed the healthy bacteria in your gut to support a healthy immune system. Fiber also offers a wide variety of health benefits such as supporting regular bowel movements, decreasing your cholesterol levels, and stabilizing your blood sugar levels. Unlike fruit juicing, fiber content is not lost when blended into a smoothie because you are consuming the whole ingredient rather than extracting part of it.

Slow Down 🧘🏾‍♀️🕖:
By drinking smoothies slowly, there’s an increased chance you’ll feel full and consume fewer unnecessary calories. The brain can take 20 to 40 minutes to release satiety (feeling full) hormones, so wait before eating or drinking more to let your smoothie digest.

Health at Every Size (HAES) is a growing movement advocating for a more inclusive definition of a “healthy” body. It teaches that weight should not be the most important measure of health, and that overall health can improve with positive lifestyle changes at any size. The HAES philosophy focuses on health-promoting behaviors like intuitive eating and physical activity, while encouraging body acceptance. These behaviors also include eating a healthful diet, getting the proper amount of sleep, stress management, and finding joy in life.

Soul & Health affirms a holistic definition of health that acknowledges that well-being and healthy habits are more important than any number on a scale. Soul & Health’s philosophy is to guide clients down a path that leads to a healthy weight naturally, rather than pursuing unsustainable weight loss. We acknowledge that every individual has unique needs and we do not support strict or standardized diets.

Papayas are a tropical fruit that most likely make you think of a warm weather vacation. This exotic fruit is full of nutrients that provide a variety of health benefits. Like other foods that naturally range from shades of red and orange to hues of pink in color—think watermelon, tomatoes, and carrots—papayas contain a carotenoid called lycopene. Lycopene is an antioxidant which means it can help neutralize free radicals in the body. Free radicals cause oxidative stress, which can lead to illness and disease. Lycopene has been shown to be bioavailable in papayas. That means the body can absorb them better from papaya than other fruits and vegetables that contain them.

Papayas are also an excellent source of fiber which helps keep you feeling fuller longer. While our bodies do not actually digest fiber, it helps feed the good bacteria in our microbiomes for better digestion and well-being. It also helps bulk up our stools for healthy elimination of toxins. A high-fiber diet is also known to support healthy blood sugar, making papaya even more helpful for lowering cholesterol levels.

The vitamin C in a single cup of papaya contains 88 milligrams of vitamin C. That’s 98 percent of your daily value. Vitamin C is important for the synthesis of collagen in our body, which is responsible for skin elasticity. Vitamin C's anti-aging effects are enhanced when coupled with vitamin A — a collagen-boosting, skin-benefiting antioxidant, and papaya has both.

How do you pick the best papaya? Look for one that's slightly soft to the touch and has a yellowish-orange skin with some green patches. If it's too soft, has bruises or blemishes, it may be overripe or damaged. You can also try smelling the papaya - a ripe one will have a sweet aroma. Once you've picked out the perfect papaya, slice it up and enjoy it as a snack with a squeeze of lime or add it to your favorite smoothie recipe. Your body will thank you!

Soul & Health is here to help you eat right and savor every bite through nutrition education. Today’s topic is seasonal eating. Seasonal eating is a delicious way to help your body, the local economy, and the planet. It means eating produce during the time of year it is at its peak ripeness. Eating in harmony with the seasons benefits our planet by allowing our environment to cycle through its natural resources and seasons with minimal human intervention and manipulation like chemicals, gases, and heat processes.

Foods that are grown and consumed during their appropriate seasons are more nutritionally dense. When foods are grown out of season, they aren’t able to follow their natural growing and ripening rhythms. Foods grown out of season are typically picked before they are ripe so they can be transported without spoiling. Out of season produce may look good, but the flavor can be bland, compared to a crop grown and picked at high season. Fruits and vegetables that are in season have been perfectly ripened by the sun, increasing the intensity of their flavor and levels of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

Spring time is ideal for leaving behind heavy, grounding foods that comfort us in the winter and embracing all things light and fresh that require quick & easy preparation and cooking.

You can always find an updated list of seasonal produce local to you at USDA.gov or seasonalfoodguide.org
