Great article. The Hanover Arcade name deserves more recognition as the first neighborhood in Syracuse to be a business and banking district. Multiple great historic banks. And also the edge of the Erie Canal where barges dropped off goods and moved them through buildings with entrances on the Canal side and into the park area. https://www.syracuse.com/living/2026/06/downtown-syracuse-preserves-hanover-squares-190-year-legacy.html We do love our Historic Neighborhood. No one knows why it is called Hanover Square, but the little triangle in Syracuse has a remarkable story to tell.

On this day in 1865, Syracuse joined a grieving nation.

On April 19, just days after the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, a eulogy was held in Hanover Square honoring his life and legacy. Two days later, Lincoln’s funeral train began its journey to Springfield, Illinois. When it passed through Syracuse on April 26, it stopped only briefly, but that didn’t stop tens of thousands from gathering at Vanderbilt Square Station to pay their final respects.

Charles B. Sedgwick delivered the eulogy that day. One line captured the feeling of a nation in mourning: “He went at the call of duty to the post of danger, and although wrecked, his life is by no means lost.”
