An Open Letter to Chef Leen Excellent
By Chef Thia | Cynthia Verna
Dear Chef Leen,
As I stood on the sacred grounds of Albuquerque, New Mexico, representing Haiti at the AfroMundo Festival, my heart was simultaneously with you in Saint-Denis, France. While I shared our rich culture through stories and flavors, you were embodying our nation’s resilience and passion—cooking nonstop for nine days to etch Haiti’s name into the Guinness World Records.
I first heard about your historic journey thanks to my cousin Nadia and the incredible Sephorah Drouillard. Through them, I was introduced to your fire, your grace, and your unwavering commitment. From that moment, I became one of your biggest supporters, even from afar.
Every moment I wasn’t on stage or in the kitchen, I was tuned into your live sessions—cheering you on, feeling the heat of your kitchen, and the warmth of your spirit. I tried several times to join your lives, but access was denied. Still, that didn’t stop my prayers, my admiration, and my deep spiritual connection to what you were doing.
Your dedication is a testament to the indomitable spirit of Haiti. Through every stir, every spice, every dish, you told the world our story—a story of perseverance, passion, and pride.
As I prepared Diri Djon Djon in New Mexico and honored our ancestors through every bite served, I felt a profound connection to you. Our journeys—though miles apart—were woven together by the same calling: to honor Haiti with excellence, love, and power.
Chef Leen, your achievement is not just a personal victory; it’s a national triumph. You are a symbol. You are history. You are Haiti.
Nou se fòs yonn lòt.
We are each other’s strength.
With honor, love, and deep respect,
Chef Thia
