La semana pasada participamos en la semana de carreras de Pioneer Elementary School, donde nuestro dueño Jesús Ramos habló con los estudiantes sobre la alegría de hacer paletas. A Jesús le encantó compartir su historia con los estudiantes y explicar por qué leer y hacer matemáticas y ciencias son importantes para hacer nuestras deliciosas paletas. ¡Siempre estamos encantados de apoyar a nuestra comunidad y a nuestros jóvenes!

Last week we participated in Pioneer Elementary’s career week where our owner Jesus Ramos spoke with students about the joy of making paletas. Jesus loved sharing his story with the students and explain why reading and doing math and science are important in making our delicious paletas! We are always happy to support our community and our youth!

It may have just been , but we’re celebrating 35 years of business! Thank you to the City of Sunnyside for presenting owner Jesus Ramos with the Mayor’s Coin for Outstanding Civic Achievement.

Jesus would like to thank God, his family, friends, employees, and the community of Sunnyside and the Yakima Valley for the tremendous support.

In 1989 Jesus had a dream to bring authentic Mexican paletas to Washington. 35 years later he’s been happy to keep that dream going!

Puede ser que solo haya sido el día nacional del helado, ¡pero estamos celebrando 35 años de negocio! Gracias a la Ciudad de Sunnyside por presentar a dueño Jesús Ramos con la Moneda del Alcalde por Logros Cívicos Sobresalientes.

Jesús le gustaría agradecer a Dios, a su familia, amigos, empleados y a la comunidad de Sunnyside y el Valle de Yakima por el tremendo apoyo.

En 1989, Jesús tuvo el sueño de traer paletas mexicanas auténticas a Washington, ¡y 35 años después ha sido feliz de mantener ese sueño!

Hispanic Heritage Month Business Spotlight:
Jesus Ramos - Owner of the Paleteria La Norteña Est. 1989.

Get to know a little more about Jesus (Chuy) Ramos.

Jesus was born and raised in Coalcomán, Michoacan. He moved to the United States when he was 16 years old and began working at a dairy. Working countless hours and still not making enough money, he decided he wanted to better his future and better himself. Jesus had very little education, but he did not let this barrier get in the way of furthering his future. This is how his idea of the Paleteria La Norteña all started.

Here are five questions that we asked Jesus:

Tell us about a Hispanic tradition of yours?
In Mexico I enjoyed attending Las Dansas that happen twice a year. Thankfully, there are still Dansas happening here in Sunnyside that I can attend.

What are your favorite foods from your Hispanic culture?
I have a few. Enchiladas Michoacana's, posole, tacos, tejuino and paletas.

What advice would you give the younger Hispanic community?
Never forget your culture and where you come from. Embrace your culture. Education is valuable and important.

What's a saying that reminds you of your country?
"No importa como te caigas. Lo que importa es como te levantas".
"Cuando ay un problema no ay que buscar el culpable. Ay que buscar la solucion".

What is something you enjoy about owning your own business?
I enjoy seeing generation upon generation bringing their kids to my business. I hope this continues.

Paleteria La Norteña has been open for 33 years and sells numerous Hispanic foods and treats. For example, paletas, ice cream, fruit cups, tejuino, corn on the cob, etc. Jesus enjoys giving back to his community and donates his product to businesses and events in the community.

Fun fact: There are 21 flavors of paletas!
