To my dear Customers and Friends, I regret to inform you that Abbie's Bakery will officially close it's doors permanently on December 31, 2015. It breaks my heart to close, since I love my job, employees, customers, and cake decorating. We were doing fairly well up through the Coastal Carolina Fair, but after that, the income was pitiful. During November and December, when we should have been so busy that we couldn't keep up, we were extremely slow. I have had to make the painful decision to close after much prayer and much time looking at all the options. Folks always want to know why...so I have compiled my reasons for why I think things have been so difficult and why I cannot proceed. 1. Three years ago, the state of SC passed a cottage bill, allowing folks to bake cakes out of their homes and sell them. They obviously do not have the overhead expenses that I have, and many people will go to them before a bakery because it is just plain cheaper for them. I have taken a huge hit because of this with all our cakes, but especially in the area of wedding cakes since this law passed. 2. Lots of folks want things like "Cake Boss cakes"...for grocery store prices. Unfortunately, I can't do that and pay the bills. 3. I have been very specific about following the copyright/trademark laws when it come to what I can/cannot do on cakes, especially birthday cakes. I have had a good number of folks turn around and walk out because I can't legally do what they want me to do. They say that they can see exactly what they want in photos on the Internet, so it CAN be done because other people are doing it. Yup, they are...but I am a business...and I don't want to go to jail and/or be fined $100K for breach of copyright/trademark. 4. And lastly, some folks come in and want a cake NOW....like right now! But we are a custom bakery...we need 48 hours to produce the cake...and we will do it to your specifications...cake flavors, icing choices, decorations you like, etc. They usually go to a grocery store to get something NOW! As hard as it is to close a business, I have to say that I have given this bakery my all. I have poured myself into everything wholeheartedly...and spent countless hours on many details. If I had NOT done my best, I would feel guilty...but I don't. I did everything that I could, and now it's over. I am extremely sad; however, I will forever hold on to the fantastic memories! Thanks for your support over these past 6-1/2 years. I will miss you all tremendously. Laurie Rysta
