September 23, 1696

A violent storm drove the Reformation, carrying Jonathan Dickinson and his companions, onto Florida’s Atlantic coast.

What followed was an extraordinary journey through the homeland of the Indigenous peoples who had lived along this coast for generations. Dickinson recorded what he witnessed in a journal published in 1699, giving us one of the earliest detailed written accounts of this part of Florida.

The danger of this coastline would lead to the creation of the House of Refuge at Gilbert’s Bar in 1876, a haven for those who survived the sea.

From shipwreck to refuge, this coast has always carried stories of survival.

September 23, 1696. Remember the wreck. Remember the people. Remember the coast.
