I am sharing this story for everyone who feeds cattle and especially for 4H kids who are involved in the beef project. 3 days ago, our Pyranees Sassy ate some cattle feed that spilled. We have had cattle feed on the premises her entire life, so she has always been around it and has never before eaten it. Cattle feed often has a supplement called Rumensin. This supplement is toxic to horses, dogs, and pigs. The supplement has the active ingredient of monensin, which acts at a muscular level, changing calcium and magnesium concentrations and leading to muscle death. Sassy has been fighting for her life since Monday. She is slowly progressing but must still be assisted to stand and walk. We are lucky that we were able to get her to the vet quickly, and she has had tremendous vet care at Livings Springs Veterinary Clinic. She still has a long way to go to fully recover, but we are hopeful that she will.
