PSA: Exzolt Availability in the United States
Exzolt is now available to most US vets directly from Merck in a 4ml sized bottle, which should make it more widely available to chicken owners. Previously, this medication was only available in either a 1 liter or 4 liter bottle, which made it incredibly price-prohibitive for a vet clinic to have on the shelf unless they were seeing a huge load of chickens. As someone that has been in charge of inventory for vet clinics, I know it just did not make economic sense for them. But with the smaller bottles, this should make it much easier for clinics to keep a few bottles on hand because they can sell them individually and move the stock more quickly.
***If your vet says they are unable to get this medication please let them know it is available direct from Merck in the 4ml size for a very reasonable cost to the vet clinic and should be available soon from most other veterinary supply companies that vet clinics use for their medication inventory***
It is a prescription medication in the United States, which means anyone wanting it from a vet will need to either have a in-person visit so the vet can examine one of your chickens, or, in the states that allow it, a virtual visit can be scheduled. Not all states allow virtual visits, so please keep that in mind and check your state laws.
While the fact that a vet visit is needed can be frustrating, it is just how it works in the United States. The vets don't make the rules, they just have to follow them to be able to keep their license to practice and they need to be paid for their expertise and time just like human doctors.
