Tonight, I light a candle for my son, Gage.

I wish I could say that grief becomes smaller with time. For me, it hasn’t. I have simply learned how to carry something I once thought was impossible to survive.
There are days when thinking about carrying this loss for the rest of my life feels overwhelming. So I don’t try to carry the rest of my life. I carry today. Sometimes I carry an hour. Sometimes a minute. And then I carry the next one.

But grief isn’t the only thing I carry.

I carry an enormous amount of love for Gage. A mother’s love doesn’t disappear when her child dies. It is still here, still looking for him, still wanting to protect him, still wanting to do something for him. So I have tried to give that love somewhere to go.
It goes into speaking his name.
It goes into remembering him.
It goes into reaching for people who are hurting.
It goes into GAGE: Gain Awareness, Give Encouragement.
And it goes into reminding people that we cannot be afraid to talk about su***de.
I know what it is to lose someone to su***de. I also know what it is to stand in the aftermath and wonder how the world can simply keep moving.

So tonight, this candle is for Gage.

But it is also for the person who is struggling quietly. For the mother who is grieving. For the family learning how to live around an empty chair. For the person who sees someone crying and wonders whether they should say something.
Say something.
Ask if they’re okay. Sit beside them. Listen. Learn the signs. Talk openly about su***de. Don’t assume someone else will notice.
And if you are the one struggling, please give someone the opportunity to help you stay.

Gage was here.
Gage was loved.
Gage is still loved.

And as long as I am here, the love I have for my son will continue to have somewhere to go.
