The village of Campbeltown, at the bell end of the Kintyre Peninsula on the west coast of Scotland, was once known as the Whisky Capital of the World. Periods of economic turmoil and reversals in the whisky trade saw their fortunes decline along with the number of local distilleries – which dropped from more than 30 to only 3 operating today.
Springbank Distillery is the lodestone here. They are the oldest family-operated independent distillery in Scotland and currently the only Scottish distillery which carries out every step of the production process on site. Floor maltings. Direct-fired stills. Oily, intense, and uniquely funky, these whiskies are, despite their recent surge in popularity, the real deal.
Longrow is Springbank’s heavily peated label, and Kilkerran is produced at the recently resurrected Glengyle Distillery, which is staffed by Springbank.
