The genealogy of apple strudel can be traced to Mesopotamian pastry traditions with references found in Assyrian texts from the 8th century B.C. and by the 18th century, strudel became popular throughout the Austrian Empire evolving into the apple strudel we know and love today.
Fun fact: German and Austrian immigrants brought the dish to southern Brazil in the 19th century, where it remains a staple in local bakeries!
