In honor of Black History Month, this Wayback Wednesday, we celebrate Clarence Freeman, a trailblazing figure in Spokane’s history. Born in 1910, Freeman overcame adversity to become one of Spokane’s first Black developers.

Graduating with honors from Lewis and Clark High School, he attended Gonzaga University while working nights at the Ridpath Hotel. After serving in World War II and retiring as a captain, Freeman returned to Spokane and, in 1948, purchased the Merlin Apartments on West Second Avenue. He and his wife, Frances, renovated the building, providing quality housing for Black military families who faced discrimination elsewhere. This endeavor led to the founding of Freeman Construction Co. In 1965, Freeman built the iconic Dick’s Drive-In on Third Avenue, a Googie-style building that continues to welcome visitors, locals, and hamburger enthusiasts at Spokane’s main gateway from I-90.
