Starting today we will no longer be offering inside seating. Outside seating will be available and we are adding some extra tables. With the recent spike in cases and the community spread, it’s safer for our staff and customers if you enjoy your coffee outside. We hope this a temporary move and that the curve flattens again soon. In the meantime: stay safe. Be kind. #wereallinthistogether #wevegotthisspokane

Stay safe. Be extra kind. We're all in this together.

We normally don’t respond to bad things people say about us or our businesses because we know running businesses like ours that’s just par for the course. We have to take the good with the bad. But today we have to speak up.

For the past five days a woman has sat on our back patio with a sign advocating for victims of sexual abuse. Her Instagram photos show that she has also been at least a dozen other businesses in town, many of them our friends and neighbors.

Since we are well aware of the painful and devastating accounts of sexual violence that have been circulating in Spokane, and since many of our friends, former employees and current employees have been directly and indirectly affected by these experiences, we allowed her stay even though she wasn’t a customer. I, Kris, sat down with her for an hour and a half Monday, listening to her story and hearing the ways she said she wanted to help Spokane be better around these issues. She made a vague reference to stories she’d heard about us but would not elaborate. She had some relevant ideas, although many of them only applied to businesses where late nights and alcohol were involved. We had already discussed if there were things we should be doing better/differently in many aspects of our businesses in light of recent events.

This morning, she approached a female barista who has worked for us for over five years, and said she’d been told by 8-10 former female employees that Andy, the owner, allegedly took female employees into the basement to intimidate them and then threatened them, saying he’d make sure they wouldn’t get work in Spokane again if they told anyone. Our employee told her that’s not what happens here. It doesn’t. Period. Our basement contains our break room and is the only space to have more confidential meetings with employees. Over the years we have used it for tough conversations and employee reviews, but our policy is for management and owners to always have someone else there during these conversations.

To be clear, there was no suggestion of sexual misconduct.

And her most recent posts say that these 8-10 former employees are intimidated by and terrified of both Kris and Andy. As employers with two stores for nearly thirty years we’ve obviously had to had difficult conversations with many employees. But intimidation and threats? No. Even knowing it’s not true, it’s a devastating thing to hear.

After this person approached the employee our staff called us, and we come down to find out what was going on. She continued to make vague accusations about intimidation and threats, said Kris had lied to her about ignoring one former employee’s complaints, repeated the accusations about Andy, and said we had bullied and intimidated our current staff into lying for us when they defended us. Several of our staff came out to stand with us as we tried to have this conversation, but we just kept getting the nebulous accusations and finally asked her to leave. A customer called crime check, as did one of our staff, because it didn’t look like it was going in a positive direction. We issued a trespass, as we have done to many other people who disrupt the experience of our staff and customers.

Since then, we have received harassing phone calls (one person called 18 times in 10 minutes and screamed), social media posts, and reviews from a variety of people we don’t know and who don’t know us, many of whom, it appears, have never even stepped foot in our stores. We’ve been called names (including f-ing racists, rape apologists, garbage people, bullies, and host of other things.) We have been told we don’t care about our employees, about women, about Spokane, and that we have no place in this community. And it’s only been a few hours.

We have been in business a long time during which the majority of our employees and managers have been women. There are people who may not have liked working for us, and some customers who haven’t appreciated what we’ve tried to do in our stores. We know that. Our goal has always been to operate with integrity in a way that makes Spokane better. We will continue to do that to the best of our abilities.

Kris and Andy Dinnison

MONDAY. MONDAY. MONDAY. MONDAY. MONDAY. MONDAY!
(See you then!)

We know you are all excited to get back to "normal." You want to support your favorite restaurants, coffee shops, and stores, and they appreciate that so much. But when you go out try to remember that none of this is "normal" for those businesses and their employees. They are contending with a whole new raft of worries, protocols, procedures, requirements, and decisions that none of them ever imagined they'd have to deal with. They are figuring things out day by day.

Please be gentle. Be kind. Be patient. Be empathetic.

Everyone's doing the best they can with what they have in the circumstances they're given.

Welp, Spokane has been cleared for Phase 2 reopening. We are planning to be open again by June 1st. Rolling up our sleeves and taking time to get staff trained in the new reality, make sure we have safety measures in place, and restock/restart/reset so we can keep customers and staff safe. Also watching the recent spikes in cases as we prepare. Thanks for all the love the last couple months. See ya'll soon! #shoplocal #drinklocal #spokanecoffee #spokanewegotthis

Spokane Hospitality Workers Emergency Relief Fund organized by Ted Munat

Another way to help Spokane service workers affected by this crisis. There are a lot of hurting people out there, and the estimates are that when all this is over at least 40% of food service jobs won't exist any more. If you still have job security, toss a bit of that at people whose entire industry is in danger of disappearing.

UPDATE: We are off to a great start! We are currently working on a plan on… Ted Munat needs your support for Spokane Hospitality Workers Emergency Relief Fund
