The challenges our communities have when addressing homelessness, mental health, addiction, safety and the struggles of policy to actually support change is the utmost difficult task. This will take intentional approaches and partnerships with all. A world-class sports competition is taking place in Spokane this weekend at The Podium. In just one weekend, the event brings in millions of dollars in economic impact.

Downtown Spokane Partnership released the results of a survey of nearly 400 responses from downtown business and property owners. A couple of findings:

Stakeholders are facing increased safety and security challenges that are affecting employee and customer safety impacting the cost of doing business, loss of business, retention of employees and leasable rates.

Report increases in: homeless encampments, mental health episodes, open drug and alcohol use, customers and employees feeling uncomfortable and discarded needles.

75% have experienced individuals trespassing (50% say at least once a week)

The majority of businesses surveyed said crime and nuisance activity has either lowered their property’s value or the number of customers walking in the door.
