Maxwell’s Pizza & Cheesesteaks is a new fast casual dining concept developed from the original Maxwell’s East Coast Eatery. We specialize in maintaining a fun, delicious and friendly atmosphere. Providing sincere hospitality is what sets us apart from our competitors. It is our intention to surpass the expectations of our clients and to maintain a consistently high level of quality service.
The Humble Beginnings of Maxwell’s East Coast Eatery
Steven Maxwell’s Grandmother, Rosa Pleura, and Italian immigrant from Abruzzi, Italy, was an accomplished cook and restauranteur. ‘Mom Mom’ operated Pelura’s Spaghetti House in Penns Grove, NJ in the 1930’s and 40’s. success came quickly as word spread about her delicious hand-made food and the restaurant’s ‘home friendly’ welcoming ambience. These ingredients created a much sought after atmosphere in this depression era.
When was Rosa was 80 years old her youngest grandchild, 12 year old Steven Maxwell, asked her about the one and only wooden chair that she had kept from the restaurant. He asked “Mom Mom, if you go to heaven before I do, may I have your chair?” She asked why he would want that and Steven responded “You never know...I may want to have an Italian restaurant someday like you did.” She agreed and promptly announced, “the chair goes to Steven.” the chair was then relocated to his bedroom for posterity.
That same chair now sits in Maxwell’s Park City as a reminder of the humble beginnings of an Italian American Family that continues to share a love of family, friends and great food. Max still uses the same time-honored, hand-made recipes that his ‘Mom Mom’ did.
