Way back in the 7th century, someone learning to write dropped their wax tablets into an Irish bog. He or she probably expected to erase their notes in a few days and use the pages again. Because of their accident, we can still see the scratches made by a real person's stylus. They are considered the earliest surviving example of Irish writing in the Latin script.

The Springmount Bog Tablets consist of six yew-wood boards with recessed centers filled with wax. They were discovered in 1914 in the Springmount bog in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. The lucky peat-cutter promptly sold the tablets to the National Museum of Ireland, where they remain to this day. The tablets bear passages from the Psalms, the most widely read text at that time in Ireland and the standard primer for learning to read.
