We’ve had quite a few new faces follow along lately, so I thought it was time for a little “meet the owner” post, and maybe the story behind how Honey Brew came to be.
I’m Amber, owner of Honey Brew.
And believe it or not, this little dream started with me standing in my kitchen making coffee in front of my camera for TikTok.
Somehow that quickly turned into…
“Hey, I think I want to buy an old horse trailer and turn it into a coffee trailer.”
If you know me, you know I’ve always had the mindset that I can be anything I decide I want to be. I love creating. I love building something from nothing. And I’ve reinvented myself more times than I can count.
But over the last decade, “reinventing myself” took on a much deeper meaning.
About 11 years ago, I was diagnosed with Stage 4 endometriosis. It had attached itself so severely to my organs that I went through five surgeries, including one major surgery that left me hospitalized for four days.
I was told having children would be extremely difficult and most likely impossible. At only 27 years old, a hysterectomy was being discussed.
I remember sitting in the surgeons office sobbing trying to convince him I would not agree to a hysterectomy at 27. I wanted my babies first. He didn’t want to perform another surgery because of how high-risk it was, but eventually he agreed.
Then came two failed rounds of IVF.
And grief.
A lot of grief.
Eventually, I had to begin accepting that the future I had pictured for myself might look completely different. I needed something to pour myself into. I needed to figure out what could make my life feel full and give me purpose again.
At the time, I was working part-time as a medical assistant while also working full-time as a photographer, and I was completely burnt out.
I just needed something… new.
So I started a little neutral clothing boutique.
I poured myself into creating a brand I could be proud of. Instead of allowing the sadness to consume every part of my life, I focused on building something that gave me a new journey to look forward to.
Then I bought a sublimation printer and started making my own shirts in a spare room of my house to add to my collections.
Little did I know, a few viral TikToks would completely change my life.
Suddenly, that little spare-room business skyrocketed. I was filling hundreds of shirt orders, I was able to quit my job, and my monthly income grew beyond anything I had imagined.
But more importantly, it gave me freedom.
Freedom to work for myself.
Freedom to create.
Freedom to dream bigger.
And finally, a little peace.
I started vlogging my mornings and workdays on TikTok, and one of my favorite parts became making fun coffee videos before starting on my mountain of shirt orders every day.
And then my brain did what it does best…
“What if I started a coffee business?”
And if you know an Aries, you probably understand exactly what happened next.
We tend to be ambitious, independent, passionate and just impulsive enough to decide we’re going to do something and then immediately figure out HOW to make it happen. We don’t like sitting still for very long. Give us a new idea, a challenge or something someone says we can’t do, and suddenly it becomes our entire personality.
So basically… buying an old horse trailer overnight and deciding I was going to turn it into a mobile coffee shop was very on brand for me.
And that’s exactly what we did.
I wanted to take it on the road. I wanted to travel to events, meet people and see where this crazy little idea could take me.
Why Honey Brew you ask? Well during my first failed round of IVF I thought, if I can’t have a baby I’ll buy a dog and that’s exactly what we did. We found our little Bear on an online puppy site the day we lost our embryo and it brought a little joy for a short while. He was born on my birthday and I knew God had something to do with it. Just before he turned one we let him run out in our backyard as he always did and he chased something into the road and was hit by a car. I was devastated. Just like that he was ripped away from me just like the possibility of me ever having my own children was ripped from me. I contacted the breeder we got him from and as luck would have it she was pregnant with another litter and we went to pick up bears brother “Brew” a few short months later. Brew is 8 now and I knew I wanted him to be a part of this coffee journey just as he’s been there through everything else. He doesn’t know this but he has gotten me through a lot of really sad years.
When you pull the perfect shot of espresso it’s supposed to look like dripping honey so there you have it. The Honey Brew brand was made.
Then, not long after the coffee trailer came Honey Brew Coffee Shop + Boutique — combining two things I loved into one place.
And somehow this little coffee shop became so much more than somewhere to grab a latte.
It became the place people stop on their way to work. The place you stop before heading out of town for vacation. The place where someone walks in having the BEST morning…and sometimes the place where someone walks in and tells me they’ve had the absolute worst day and just needs a coffee and someone to talk to.
We laugh here.
Sometimes we cry here.
I’ve met people who live right down the road and people who were simply passing through Indiana on their travels.
And every single one of you has become part of the story.
I truly never dreamed this little idea that started with me making coffee in my kitchen for TikTok would turn into what Honey Brew is today.
But I couldn’t have done any of it without YOU.
Every coffee you buy.
Every event you visit us at.
Every post you share.
Every friend you tell about us.
Every time you choose this little local coffee shop.
It means more to me than you probably realize.
I also couldn’t do this without my coffee crew. They help make our little space thrive and keep me organized and on track 😂
Honey Brew has become such a happy place for me. It has given me purpose after a lot of scars and storms.
I’ve had some incredibly hard years. I’ve experienced grief and trauma that I’m still working through today. But I’ve also had a lot of happy ones too.
And I think that’s something important to remember about everyone you meet.
Life isn’t always what you see from the outside.
You might look at someone and think they have everything they could ever want. You might think they have it all together.
But you truly never know what someone is carrying when they walk through the door.
Maybe that’s part of why Honey Brew means so much to me.
I want you to walk through these doors and feel welcome.
I want to know your name and your coffee order.
I want you to tell me about your vacation, your kids, your exciting news or your terrible morning.
And if all you need that day is a smiling face handing you a really good cup of coffee, I can do that too.
There’s a reason I always say:
“Drink coffee. Be happy.”
Because life is short.
Dream the crazy dream.
Buy the horse trailer.
Start over.
Reinvent yourself.
Be humble.
Be kind.
And never assume you know the battles someone else is fighting.
You will always see my smiling face when you walk into Honey Brew. I still wake up sometimes and think I don’t have it all together but you know what that’s ok. We have to live for today. That’s what I’ve learned. Life will unpredictably break your heart but it will also bring you some of the happiest moments of your life too. But I will always be kind. No matter what I battle. We can always find happiness somewhere, in the silver lining, in the sunshine and even in the rain.
That’s me.
That’s my heart.
And behind that smile is a story that ultimately led me right here.
So, to all of our new followers — HI! I’m Amber.
And welcome to Honey Brew.
I’m so glad you’re here.
Drink coffee. Be happy. 🤎
