Today is my daughter's last day at Top It. It's hard for me to know what to say because I have so many different feelings about today. You could easily say that she's the reason why I own Top It to begin with. Eliza was hired by the prior owners five years ago in August. She was 18 at the time, and I knew that life and time were passing too quickly. And so, to spend more time with her before this time would come, I bought Top It. Yes, I bought a business so I could spend more time with my kids before they grew up and moved on. And I'm so glad I did!!

I never wanted this day to come... but it came, and I knew it would. But guess what? She's right next door at Marie! So I will still get to see her often 🙂 I'm grateful for the chance I've had to work with her, Josh, and Grace who have also have moved on to college and am lucky to have one still at home I can work with for a few more years. We all have reasons for why we do what we do. I do Top It so I can strengthen my relationships with my kids. For the most part, I think that's worked 🙂

Here's the first picture I took of us after I bought this wonderful place, and here are the two of us now, nearly five years later. Thank you, Eliza, for being such a great partner and part of making Top It what it is! You have been amazing!!! Love you! And isn’t she just beautiful and lovely?

It’s White Star Wednesday! These brass buttons and cufflinks were made by the Waterbury Button Company in Waterbury, CT. The Waterbury Button Company supplied this design to the crew members on that fateful voyage in 1912. These handcrafted buttons were made from the original tooling and pattern used for the uniforms of the officers on history’s most famous ocean liner. Although not from the Titanic, they are not replicas and can be seen on the wall just behind the register at Top It.

Buttons identical to these have been recovered from the wreck site and are on display in museums and exhibits owned by RMS Titanic Inc. You can see this one in Portland until October 15th at the OMSI.
