“FLOAT ON”

Did you float this summer? Lazy river at Wild Water West, kayak on the Big Sioux, a Dollar Store floaty in a backyard pool—flat on your back with eyes closed to the sun, feeling weightless (if weightlessness even is a thing that exists to be felt)…This drink, a “rootbeer” float espresso cream soda, is inspired by that particular marker of a summer well spent, of moments passed floating into the oblivion. We want to carry this state of mind into the beginning of new duties and semesters, the darkening stark reality of the crispness of Fall. Even if in your life, too, suddenly and unexpectedly things end up a bit too heavy…Float On.
 

“NEW-FASHIONED”

Our friends at Songbird made a Cherry Old-Fashioned kombucha, and we wanted to use it in a feature drink. But what to do? I don’t know how it started, maybe they had just finished watching Christopher Nolan’s 2010 sci-fi banger with Leonardo DiCaprio but someone around here decided to essentially make a tea-based NA Old-fashioned within a tea-based NA Old-Fashioned. A dream garnished with an orange twist, Fee Brothers bitters, and a maraschino cherry.

August Feature Drinks have landed:

“PEACH BUM” 🏖️🍑

Summer is not fleeting. It is in full swing and we have our striped vinyl tri-fold chairs set up at lakes Wall or Alvin (extra points for Falls Park). Bums out, thumbs up, espresso sodas in hand. They’re flavored with macerated yellow peaches, lovingly infused with hand processed cardamom seed and of course love and all the magic we could muster because there are literal WEEKS of summer left and we didn’t choose the beach the beach and the peach chose us.

 
“PUT THE LIME IN THE COCONUT”

Another refreshing number for the August heat. A made-to-order limeade with fresh squeezed lime juice, coconut, vanilla, and a rim of toasted coconut sugar with demerara and lime zest if you get it in a glass to stay. Sip it slowly, sit outside and savor summer solo (or with a friend old or new). Put the lime in the coconut and drink ‘em both up.

JULY FEATURE DRINKS COMING IN HOT🔥
(Okay but actually they are both iced. Whatever.)

HORCHATA LATTE
(Finally, a drink name from us that’s self-explanatory.) It’s exactly what it sounds like, so no need to tone down your excitement here: Mexican Horchata from our friends and loved ones BibiSol and a double shot of espresso. Served over ice. Cooling, refreshing, spiced, and slightly sweet, we reserved this caffeine delivery system especial for the hottest month of the year.
 

SOUTHERN (DAKOTA) SWEET TEA
We heard someone refer to Sweet Tea as “The House W**e of the South” and there might not be a better way to contextualize the ubiquity of this iconic summer beverage in one of the most sweltering regions of this country. We were going for an ingredient-driven (because we will never, ever, say “elevated” as a menu descriptor) version of this classic: Gao Wen black tea concentrate brewed with organic cane sugar water, layers of lemon (fresh squeezed, simple syrup, and finally the whole darn lemon wedge thrown in the glass), ice and a mint leaf garnish. Bottoms up, y’all.

June Features as follows:

“IS IT HOT IN HERE…(OR IS IT HONEY?)”

Yes. Things are really heating up as we approach the summer solstice and I, for one, am starting to sweat. Maybe it’s the icy hot honey latte I’m sipping, gently infused with layers of heat: Dried guajillo and ancho chilies, fresh crisp jalapeño and serrano, red pepper flake suspended in Dahlberg Farms local raw honey, and a hit of acid from Bragg Organic Apple C***r Vinegar are really working for me in this double shot 12 oz. iced latte garnished with Bibisol’s housemade spicy Tajin. Excuse me, I’m going to need to take a cold shower.
 
“SUNNY-T”

Thirsty from all that summer? We’ve got soda, OJ, purple stuff…and Sunny-T! It’s got a bunch of healthy junk in it, thanks to its base of Rishi Turmeric Mango tea. Their tropical take on turmeric features luscious and juicy Sri Lanka mango, tangy sweet pineapple, fragrant yuzu citrus peel, and exotic top notes of jasmine and makrut lime. We’ve sauced it up with orange and lemon simple syrup and a little extra turmeric root, then topped it with fresh cracked Tellicherry peppercorns, to serve to you over ice. Truly sunshine in a glass. MAY DAY! FEATURE DRINK DROP at 7:30AM

“Barb Rosewater”

Barb Rosewater was the Lyon County Corn Chucking champ in 1978. And also a 2nd degree black belt in Judo. She’s a legend. At least that’s what somebody told me in the Breaks staff group chat today and I believed them. Who IS Barb Rosewater? You’re going to have to go ahead and come in, order an Organic Rhubarb and Rosewater simple syrup 12 oz. single shot latte (iced or hot), and find out.
 
“Labubu Berry (Italian Cream Soda)”

When the first Monster stopped by The Breaks on his own on a quiet Wednesday afternoon, we barely even noticed. A nine-toothed metronome swinging from a backpack, we briefly locked wide eyes. Returning with a friend the following Tuesday they kept to themselves, toes down ears up, and we paid them no mind. Each visit brought a fresh monster, and a quick glance around the shop soon told us the creatures outnumbered the baristas as we slowly felt ourselves losing (the illusion of) control. Thursday’s opener flipped the lights to find them in the darkness behind the bar, dutifully brewing their Labubu juice.

When life hands you Ube, wild blueberry, and thyme you make an Italian cream soda.
