Caregiver burden can become a serious health issue when someone becomes so focused on a loved one’s medical needs that their own healthcare gets pushed aside.

Just days before her death at 80, Dolly Parton revealed she had been dealing with health issues she “didn’t pay attention to” while caring for her husband Carl Dean before his death in March 2025.

Dolly later acknowledged that she had let some of her own medical needs go and eventually needed treatment.

From a healthcare standpoint, caregivers still need preventive care, medical monitoring and treatment of their own. And Dolly’s final interview makes her nearly 60-year marriage even more emotional: while her own health needed attention, she chose to focus on caring for the man she loved.

Here's why Dolly put her husband's health first.
