Many of you have called or messaged with questions about the Granny Blue Fund in our cafeteria. I hope this clears up some of the confusion.

The extra food mentioned is anything on the serving line that students would like more of. Cafeteria staff serve each student their initial free meal, which is reimbursed through claims sent to the state's Child Nutrition Unit, but sometimes they simply want more. These a la carte items are what they are "paying extra" for. Most want an extra helping of the day's entree. Others may want an extra helping of fruit or a side dish. NO CHILD IS TURNED AWAY for wanting extra food for breakfast or lunch so long as they are not wasting and they have plenty of time to eat it.

This is where Granny Blue comes in. We understand that some don't have that extra little bit of money for more food, so Granny takes care of them. When the fund runs out, many school employees have been known to cover these costs out of their own pockets. We understand that the community members wish all the food served to students could be free. We feel the same; however, the cost for the food must be covered in one way or another. This is just one way we can be sure that happens.

Thank you to everyone who has reached out and shared our story with others! You are truly the best! It's been said that it takes a village to raise a child, and we feel that the Blue Devil village is doing everything it can to ensure that every child goes home fulfilled both in education and with delicious, nutritious meals. 🙂

Whew! We made it through the first breakfast of the year, and it was a HUGE success! Thank you to everyone who came down to help make the first morning back to school great for all the kiddos.

Just a few things to remember:

*All elementary students arriving at school before 7:30 should report first to the cafeteria. Teachers are not in their classrooms and ready for students before that time.

*High School students can get a Grab-N-Go breakfast and take it to the rotunda to eat any time breakfast is served.

*Breakfast is served at 7:15 every morning (a bit earlier some days). We dismiss all who are finished at 7:30, and everyone is sent to class at 7:40. Class begins promptly at 7:45.

*Any students arriving late, please come by and get a breakfast to take with you. There will be a place for you to eat before going to class.

Don't forget that all students eat FREE!!

However, sometimes the food is just so good that they need more to fill those bellies! This is where their account comes in. Each student has an account with their name on it where you can deposit money for any extras they may like.

We also have the Granny Blue account. You all know that when your kids want something and you can't get it, they go to Granny. Well, our Granny Blue is where the community can contribute to those kids who don't have money for the extras their bellies need to be full. If you'd like to donate, just contact Mrs. Angie at 501-518-2223.

As we gear up for another great year in Blue Devil Nation, we would like to remind you all of our ACES program. This is an out-of-school time program funded by the 21st Century grant. With it, we provide Shirley students with a safe place to spend their out-of-school time while continuing their learning in academics, character, self-esteem, and social skills.

This year we hope to grow our program even more. Our staff has been working hard to plan clubs and groups that will hold our students' attention and keep them coming back again and again.

One of my favorite mornings of the year even if it is one of the hardest, most exhausting ones too. Congratulations to the Class of 2026!!! We love you and wish you nothing but the best!!!
