It was a fairly quiet week last week, with everyone focused on Christmas with family, friends and volunteering to help others celebrate. Thank you all those who worked through the holidays, First responders, hospital staff, those who keep the lights on for us and the supplies delivered.
New Year's Day will be a the start of many resolutions and hopes for 2026. Here is a wonderful example of 'Community Spirit' from the Family Restaurant in Shepherd. 'Free Meals For Anyone in Need'. Walterine Carr and her sister Carla are serving warm hearty meals to our community from 1 PM until the food is gone. They explain this wonderful generosity in this way," No cost, just love, because community means taking care of one another!" If you would like to volunteer to help with this event, call them at Walterine 936-714-0461, Carla at 832-480-0553. If you would like to help serve, you will be welcome. Delivery only to individuals in Shepherd. I will be sure to take a photo ot two of this event.
On January 2, Coldspring Garden Club will meet at 1.30 PM with a very interesting talk from Phyllis Campbell entitled " Flying Colors- Attracting & Feeding Hummingbirds." Note this will be on Friday and not Thursday, because of the holiday. The Garden Club will hold two Field Trips in the first part of 2026. In March the Club will go to 'Conroe Greenhouses' for a tour and information. In May a Tour of Irene Pawlowski Gardens and a program on Daylilies will follow. The Garden Club meets every month on the first Thursday of the month.
Coldspring Senior Center will have a New Year's Party on December 31 following lunch. There will be games and fun so make sure to book your meal. In February the Center will hold a Dinner Dance on Saturday 14, Valentines Day. More on that to come!
Coldspring Chamber of Commerce have a calendar of events for the New Year on their web site. Many local organizations do the same. We are lucky to have a variety of such breadth in our small county. I mention that Shepherd Chamber of Commerce is hoping to hold a monthly Farmers Market starting in March. It will be in the small park next to the Library. Call or text the Chamber number for more information.
If you visit El Taquito Restaurant in Shepherd, you will notice that part of the Christmas decorations includes a backdrop with Santa and his sled flying through the sky. Carmen, the owner, invited me to have my picture taken in front of it, so if you want to have a photo too, call in before the decorations come down!
