A message from Chef Lisa on our new private wine label, Passionista de Sedona.

“Now I am not going to drop names, but an A-list star recently dined at Dahl & DiLuca with his group of four, and he loves wine. He set some parameters, then asked us to choose the ones for the table. His price range wasn’t the most expensive–not because he can’t afford anything he wants, but because he knew that there are some great wines at reasonable prices.

I was thinking about what to send to the table. So I took a small chance and sent out 4-ounce pours of our newly bottled Passionista de Sedona, which wasn’t even for sale yet. I distinctly remember his quote about it: He said it is complex and yet so friendly, and that “I could drink this wine every day of my life. This is a wine that goes with everything.” I took that as a huge compliment, and it made me even more confident in what we had.

For 30 years, I have been choosing wines I think will fit all people’s palates. But when it comes to the wines that I would drink any night of the week, as well as ones people around me, such as Scott, who has a more complicated palate, would like, I choose wines where the tannins are medium to high, but they’re velvety, not harsh. I want a wine you can enjoy with every bite of food, because they are in harmony. That is exactly what I thought of the first time we tasted this wine.

David Dimler, my wine director for over 20 years, and I were completely blown away. We looked at each other after that first sip, and I remember thinking, “ This is it. This is the kind of wine I have been searching for.”

Made by winemaker Andrew Jones in Paso Robles, it’s a 2023 magnificent blend of 50% Grenache, 40% Syrah, and 10% Mourvèdre that emulates the composition of the famous Châteauneuf-du-Pape from the Rhône Valley in France. It simply feels right the moment it touches your palate. There’s this lush red fruit, raspberry, plum, even a little black currant layered with soft spice, lavender, and just enough earthiness to give it depth. It’s a wine that invites you in and is beautifully balanced. And for me, that’s everything.”

I’m a romantic, so Valentine’s Day has always been close to my heart. I believe romance is what makes the world go round and setting the stage for romance is a huge passion of mine. From decorating the restaurants, to creating the Valentine’s Day menus, to cooking the food itself, every layer has to be an aphrodisiac.

In our Italian restaurants, we place a quote on our Valentine’s prix fixe menus that says it all:

“In the true spirit of Italian dining, lovers share multiple courses to extend the pleasure of each other’s company. The delights below are made for sharing. Tonight, I invite you to taste the flavors of my table in hopes that it will warm the essence of your hearts.”

That philosophy guides everything we do: from candlelight and music to the way each dish is meant to be lingered over. It’s why I was so deeply honored to see Mariposa and Dahl & DiLuca named among OpenTable’s Top 100 Most Romantic Restaurants in America, and recognized by TripAdvisor in their Best of the Best Top 1% Date Night Restaurants.
