Yesterday, a man who I’ve spent my entire adult life trying to emulate passed. John Finney lived all the characteristics of a proud black Christian man. The sadness I felt when hearing of his passing, was almost immediately replaced with a joy for having the honor and privilege to have known him. He served Savannah as the Executive Director of Equal Opportunity Association (EOA) of Savannah for more than thirty years, a man who could have easily taken his talents to any of the bigger cities in this country, but his love of church, justice, and community kept him here. His personal interest in me during my teen years, carried on throughout my adult life. The last time he introduced me at a speaking engagement about three years ago, he said the one regret he had of me, was that “he is a graduate of Savannah High, and not Beach.

He has touched many as he passed along, he has cheered many with a word or song.He has showed many they were traveling wrong. He has done his duty as a Christian ought, he has brought salvation to a world that’s wrought, he has spread the message as the Master taught. His living was not in vain.
