Yesterday, a true Los Angeles vegan pioneer, Vegan Joint, closed its doors for the last time.
I was there for the final day to hug my dear friend, Hnoi. We’re both old-school in this industry—we’ve known each other for well over twenty years, long before either of us ever owned our own restaurants. Anyone who knows Hnoi knows she is one of the most hardworking, relentless human beings alive. I have always been deeply inspired by her grit and her refusal to ever give up.
Over the years, and especially through the brutal post-pandemic challenges we’ve all faced, Hnoi and I became even closer. We became each other’s safe space for support and encouragement.
Making the decision to walk away after 20 years takes immense bravery. People say running a restaurant is hard, but that’s a massive understatement. Running a vegan restaurant is like running a non-profit in a niche market. Even today, people still walk into our spots, realize there’s no meat, and walk right back out. Between skyrocketing labor costs, inflation, and the current economy, small independent businesses are fighting a constant uphill battle against giant corporate chains.
Vegan Joint was a true pioneer in the Los Angeles plant-based scene. Hnoi, thank you for 20 years of dedication, nourishing this community, and leading with heart. You served LA so well.
As this chapter closes, I know the next open door will bring amazing things. Wishing you the absolute best on your new journey! 🌿✨
