Most guests come to Santacafé for dinner, cocktails, and one of Santa Fe’s most beloved patios.

What many don’t realize is that beneath the bar sits a piece of Santa Fe history.

The illuminated stone well below the floor is a reminder that long before Santacafé became a restaurant, this building was the home of José Manuel Gallegos—better known as Padre Gallegos—a priest, politician, territorial delegate to Congress, and one of the most influential figures in nineteenth-century New Mexico.

Built between 1857 and 1862, the Padre Gallegos House has served many purposes throughout its history, from a private residence to a rooming house and even a mission. More than 160 years later, guests still gather here—now over great food, good wine, and conversation.

Next time you find yourself at the bar, take a look down. Some of Santa Fe’s stories are still right beneath your feet.
