3 curiosities of Comida Jarocha that blew my mind 🌊
Veracruz is where Mexico first met the world, and you can taste it.
1. Huachinango a la Veracruzana — Mediterranean meets Gulf. Red snapper in tomato sauce with olives, capers & chiles. Spanish + Indigenous + African roots in one plate. The true taste of the port.
2. Vanilla is FROM here. The world’s vanilla was born in Papantla, Veracruz. The Totonacs grew it long before anyone else. That sweet smell? It’s literally the origin.
3. They don’t do small portions. Arroz a la tumbada — invented when fishermen just “tumbled” the catch into rice — once broke a Guinness World Record. And Zacahuil? A tamal up to 2 meters long, wrapped in banana leaves and slow-cooked underground.
Which one would you try first? 1, 2 or 3?
