Over the past week several weeks, SLOPD has investigated two reports of unknown males speaking to children walking to/from school, asking them if they needed a ride. The first incident was reported on Royal Way near CL Smith on April 27th where a child reported a white male in a white van asked her if she needed a ride to school. The second incident was reported on Ward Street near Hawthorne Elementary on May 5th where a child reported a white male in a gold 4-door sedan asked her if she needed a ride home from school. In both instances, the children did not get into the vehicles and reported the interaction immediately to adults who then notified SLOPD. Officers were unable to locate the vehicles and males described by the children, and patrol and Detectives are consistently patrolling near our local elementary schools. At this time, we do not believe the two incidents are related.

For parents and guardians, please take a moment to speak with your kids about how to respond if an unknown adult approaches them. The National Crime Prevention Council has some good tips for talking to kids about safety without scaring them. https://bit.ly/3VKep4R

If you see something suspicious, please report whatever it is immediately: 911 for emergencies or 805-781-7312 for things less emergent. In the case of an unknown adult attempting to contact a child, please call 911.
