September 4 is "Día Nacional del Vino Chileno" because it commemorates a pivotal moment in Chile’s wine history.
September 4, 1545, the first documented request for vines and wine.
September 4, 2015, Chile officially declares a "National Wine Day."
On September 4, 1545, Pedro de Valdivia wrote to King Charles V of Spain from La Serena, Chile, requesting “vides” (grapevines) — for the newly established colony. The letter is considered one of the earliest documented references to wine in Chile and is traditionally associated with the beginning of Chile’s viticultural tradition.
The date became an official national celebration centuries later. In 2015, former President Michelle Bachelet signed a decree establishing September 4 as "Chile’s National Wine Day," marking more than 500 years of Chilean wine history and recognizing wine as part of the country’s culture, heritage, economy, and international identity.
September 18th commemorates Chile’s "Independence Day," traditionally celebrated with wine and empanadas.
