We combine classic shojin and sushi techniques with local, seasonal ingredients to create healthy and flavorful dishes with a light footprint. Some of our most notable dishes include our nigiri, our specialty rolls, our ramen, and our robata items. We use mountain yam, konjac, soybean curd, and other vegan ingredients to replace conventional proteins throughout our menu.

We are beyond honored to be included in the SF Chronicle’s Top 100 Restaurants for the second year in a row. This recognition is a testament to our incredible staff, whose relentless hard work and passion keep Shizen humming every single day. Running a restaurant in 2026 comes with its share of challenges, but seeing our community fill our seats night after night makes every bit of effort worth it. We have some bittersweet yet exciting news to share!

We would like to take this opportunity to show our appreciation for our long time sushi chef and friend, Jimi. Over the last ten years, Jimi has helped shape Shizen into what it is today. From humble beginnings, to gaining recognition from our community, pivoting to take out and outdoor dining during the Covid era, to figuring out how to run a restaurant in 2025: Jimi helped make all of the challenges tolerable and all of the achievements all the more exciting. Thank you for all of your hard work and dedication. You will be missed by our staff and by all of your regulars!

The good news is Jimi is staying in the Shizen family! He will be heading down south to open Shizen’s sister restaurant Tane’s new location in the Highland Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. Stay tuned for more details on the opening. We wish Jimi all the best, and can’t wait to see him shine in Southern California

Shizen will be closed this coming Tuesday, 10/25, and Wednesday, 10/26, to allow staff to attend the memorial of a dear friend.

Chef John Le was one of our first sushi chefs when Shizen first opened. He was an indispensable part of our team and, as we all grew together, our family.

John left Shizen in 2018 to found in Las Vegas, a remarkable plant-based sushi bar into which he poured his heart and soul.

John was a pioneer in this work that we are all doing together. He was unafraid to challenge himself, to push himself both towards achievement and vulnerability. He was a natural leader, a loving father, a devoted husband, and a loyal friend. We miss him very much.
