It is with great sadness that I’m writing to share the news that we will be permanently closing August (1) Five.

Since opening our doors to you in November 2016, we have strived to celebrate modern India and its culinary kaleidoscope of flavors, textures, and colors. For the past 4 years, we broke naan together, and since March, we’ve been trying to weather this storm together.

Thank you for creating your special memories at 524 Van Ness, for welcoming us into your lives, for raising a toast at our bar, and for living life king size — just like our mascot the great Maharaja of Patiala. We’ll miss you all so much.

We are open for takeout/delivery until December 20th. We’d be honored to deliver you your August (1) Five fix for one last time. ❤️

This Diwali, we are excited and proud to collaborate with Smitten and introduce a rich, multi-layered and texturally fantastic flavor made specially for the Festival of Lights. This flavor layers figs, walnuts, vanilla and bright citrus together in a honey and cardamom base. And the result is a scoop that can be best described in one word — sublime.

Today, we turn the spotlight on Potato & Fig Kofta, one of our most popular gluten-free vegetarian dishes. Chopped mission figs stuffed into oven-roasted russet potatoes, spiced and fried before adding into a decadent, aromatic yogurt-based sauce finished with a tempering of mace & cardamom.

Did you know that kofta is a family of meatball dishes found all over the world? In Greece and Cyprus, vegetarian versions are known as hortokeftedes, in Turkey they have çiğ köfte and in Europe, it's often served in a fast-food sandwich in kebab shops.
