On each visit, you and your guests will enjoy daily menus, which draws from a repertoire that has made Greens one of the premiere vegetarian restaurants in the country. From our airy, art-filled dining room, with floor to ceiling windows you are treated to sweeping views of the Marina, the Golden Gate Bridge and the Marin headlands. Greens Restaurant is located in a converted warehouse at historic

Fort Mason, which currently is home to more than 50 non-profit cultural and environmental organizations. We opened in 1979 under the auspices of the San Francisco Zen Center. Built by San Francisco Zen Center carpenters, the restaurant incorporates 12 types of wood - from the massive black walnut doors, the hickory stairs at our entrance, the curved bar featuring Port-Orford-Cedar, and the dining tables of maple, walnut and cherry. Greens Restaurant was a pioneer in establishing vegetarian cuisine in the United States. In the 60's and 70's, vegetarian restaurants were mostly small out-of-the way cafés. There was no high profile vegetarian restaurant in the United States. Greens changed that by raising the bar, by placing vegetarian cuisine on a level with other fine dining restaurants. We have been reviewed by food and design magazines from the time we opened. Today we are surprised if a good restaurant does NOT have vegetarian options. Greens helped pave the way for this acceptance. Greens also provided an opportunity for Zen students to work together, thus extending their Buddhist practice into the workplace. For many years, the only employees at Greens were Zen students. Traditionally, Buddhists have valued being in the world with an attitude of attentiveness and taking care - the basic elements of service. Greens provided, and still provides, an opportunity to put these basic values into practice. This continues to be the primary purpose for Greens - to be of service. This is manifested by providing wholesome food in lovely surroundings, and most importantly, by each of our efforts to take care of our guests.

Next week, we have the pleasure of welcoming Chef Anya El-Wattar back into our kitchen for a one-night-only dinner on Thursday, January 15. Reservations are nearly full, and we hope you’ll join us.

Chef Anya El-Wattar’s cooking is shaped by early memories of foraged summers and family kitchens, guided by a belief that food should be both meaningful and generous. That shared sense of purpose led her to Greens, where she cooked alongside our team before opening Birch & Rye to wide acclaim. Her restaurant earned Eater San Francisco’s Chef of the Year, a place in the Michelin Guide California selection, and a James Beard Awards semifinalist nod for Best New Restaurant, followed most recently by her appearance on Top Chef Season 21. For one evening only, Birch & Rye returns to the table, and we’re honored to welcome a dear friend back.

It's the one, the only, the famous Greens veggie burger. What makes it so special? First, we make an irresistible patty with mushrooms, lentils, and veggies and griddle it to crisp perfection. Then we melt local sharp cheddar on top and serve it with heirloom tomatoes, lettuce from our farm, red onion, avocado crema, and chipotle aioli. Did we mention that we make the buns in house too? Meet Jessica, our pupusa queen 👑 Jessie has been with Greens for 5 years and has quickly become our special project master. No dumpling, pierogi, or pupusa is too tough to stuff for her, and she always takes on new challenges to make our menu better. She is also responsible for cleaning and preparing all of our beautiful produce as soon as it comes in from the farms! Thank you Jessie for being a bright light in our kitchen ✨

"The Redwoods" at Greens is a magical seating installation by the famed JB Blunk. Masterpiece 'Greens' was installed in 1979 and has served as functional seating area and centerpiece in our dining room for over 46 years, serving as a symbol of the seamless integration of art, nature, and everyday life.
