After Patrick and I were married, for our honeymoon, we drove my chocolate labrador retriever Bryce across the country from Philadelphia to San Francisco, making our way down the southern route and over to the Grand Canyon. This was, we try to explain to our daughter, before google and internet searches. We had made reservations at Blackberry Farm for one night, planning to stop by Dollywood, as it was a long held dream of mine to visit. In Pigeon Forge, we discovered the main strip, The Parkway, was done up in blazing lights for Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas, and the cars were very, very slowly crawling down it to reach Traffic Light #8, where you turn left onto Dollywood Lane. What was to be a quick drive by turned into a several hour adventure, and by the time we turned onto Dollywood Lane and drove all the way down, at the park entrance, in the darkness, we came upon barricades and signs that the park was temporarily closed. We turned around, only making it back after the last sitting at BlackBerry Farms’ world-renowned restaurant, but they were kind enough to still serve us. It’s a story we retell as an example of how our family indulges each other’s dreams, how sometimes it’s just the journey and not the destination that matters, and we always think of that magical day-into-night slow parade of cars driving by the holiday lights of Pigeon Forge every time we hear a Dolly Parton song. May her memory and music continue to fill our lives and always be a blessing and example to us. ♥️ Joanna
