I went to the airport to pick up my wealthy brother. But then I froze when I saw my fiancé kissing my best friend right in the middle of the terminal. My brother squeezed my shoulder and said coldly: “Little sister, don't cry... Tomorrow, they'll lose everything.”
Exactly twelve days before my wedding, the ultimate betrayal detonated beneath the fluorescent glare of Terminal 3.
I had arrived early with an oversized cardboard welcome sign to greet my older brother, Nolan, who was flying home after two grueling years managing his overseas investment syndicate. But my gaze never reached the international gates.
A familiar silhouette near the departures area made my heart stutter.
It was Derek, my fiancé, who had texted me hours ago complaining about a mandatory corporate seminar in Seattle.
Yet there he stood, his hands tenderly cupping the jaw of a woman in an elegant cream coat, melting into a deep, consuming kiss.
The woman was Clara. My maid of honor.
My best friend since childhood, who had tearfully hugged me yesterday claiming she was rushing to her dying mother’s bedside!
Resting by their feet were matching luxury bags tagged for a romantic getaway to Cabo San Lucas.
My welcome sign slipped from numb fingers.
The air evacuated my lungs as a cavernous ache ripped through my ribs.
Blinded by white-hot fury, I took a shaking breath, prepared to storm across the terminal and tear them apart, when a heavy, unyielding hand clamped onto my shoulder.
I spun around.
Nolan stood right behind me in a sharp charcoal suit, his steel-gray eyes locking onto the two lovers with terrifying, predatory calm.
“Don't shed a single tear for them, Emily,” Nolan whispered, his voice dangerously low. “And do not make a public scene.”
“I have to confront them!” I choked out through tears.
Nolan’s grip tightened, his tone turning clinical:
“A confrontation here only gives them an out to manipulate the narrative. Play the ignorant fool for twenty-four hours. Let them board that flight. Let them drink their champagne. Because by tomorrow night, I swear to you, they are going to lose every single thing they own.”
