Here we go again…but for certain this time! Our last night of dinner service at LS Divisadero will be Sunday 7/7. It’s been a fantastic 20 year run, and I couldn’t be more grateful for the amazing staff and customers that have been a part of this journey! The Alamo Square/Western Addition/Nopa community is the best…it’s been an honor to be a part of it for 2 decades! Thanks for all the love and support! ***Note. LS Valencia will remain open and ready to serve you***

So last week we had a 13 pizza order going to a school event to feed 50 kids and adults. Easy stuff for us. After talking to the customer, we agreed that they would order on our website to get the pizzas delivered via DoorDash. We made the pizzas, the order was picked up by a courier, and as the delivery window came and went the customer watched the tracking on the order just stop. The “dasher” disappeared with the food. 50 people left the event hungry and disappointed. Our reputation suffered. This happens all the time on third party delivery, on a smaller scale and in smaller ways.

Would love to know how our friends at DoorDash and UberEats got an exception to this ban on fees? Lobbying dollars, or maybe just good fortune.

For the record, we don’t charge any service fees or SF mandate surcharges. Tho we appreciate why some restaurants do.

Many customers have asked why we don’t do our own delivery to avoid the commissions paid to third party delivery (TPD) companies like DoorDash and UberEats? The answer is that we can’t compete with them, as these companies have an advantage due to how they categorize their couriers (aka employees) as independent contractors. No workers comp, no liability insurance, no health insurance, no sick pay, no retirement plan, and no minimum wage. Pizza Hut will go with TPD, just as Dominos partnered with UberEats earlier this year. **Question….How would you feel about delivering food under this no-benefits paradigm?**

First off, a huge thank you to all of you that have shared kind words of support since we announced our closure. And much gratitude to those of you who have come in and dined with us! It has made a profound difference for both the business and the staff!

Here is the update. We are still in contract to sell the restaurant assets, however there has been a bump in the road that has delayed things. As things stand, we will remain open through at least January.

I made the decision to announce things early so that the staff would have ample time to prepare for a change. The risk in announcing early (before the deal was 100% locked down) was that some sort of delay/issue could materialize. My sincere apologies to everyone for the uncertainty that this process has brought. Trying my best to navigate things with as much transparency as possible.

A sign of the times…

Today is 19 years for The Original Little Star Pizza on Divisadero!

With a heavy heart on this anniversary day, we announce that LS Divisadero will be closing at the end of this year.

It has been a marvelous run, and an honor to have been a part of the Western Addition/Nopa/Alamo Square neighborhood. A tremendous thanks to all the lovely people that have passed through our doors and supported us!

These 19 years could not have been possible without all of the the hardworking and dedicated staff who have been a part of the Little Star family! Words cannot express my appreciation.

Now the good news…Little Star Valencia will remain open and ready to serve you.

DoorDash wants to bring everyone to the table to discuss pragmatic policy? We can start by talking about how 20% commission rates are not sustainable for an industry that typically operates on single digit profit margins?!?!

Go NYC for taking a step to balance the scales! By classifying couriers (the lifeblood of their service) as independent contractors, 3rd party delivery companies avoid minimum wage, workers comp, sick pay, and other employee benefits. They’ve spent millions lobbying to maintain this model. Is it fair to couriers? What’s the true cost of providing delivery in a way that is more equitable to couriers and restaurants?
