On behalf of Melissa Perello and Wine Director Iris Rowlee,
we're honored to welcome esteemed Guest Winemaker Chiara Ciavolich for a highly-anticipated special event on March 11. Chefs and have created an Abruzzese-inspired prix fixe menu which will be presented in concert with hand-selected Ciavolich wines.
Since 1853, the Ciavolich family has been making wine in the hills of Abruzzo. Francesco Ciavolich built the first cellar in Miglianico, opposite his residence, today one of the oldest and most evocative in Abruzzo, where he made his own wine from the grapes that came from the surrounding land.
Wine was made in this location until the autumn of 1943 when the retreating Germans established their headquarters on the upper floors of the Miglianico building, allowing the family to settle in the underground cellar. On 8 December of the same year, the SS imposed the evacuation. That was the last year of winemaking in the ancient underground cellar.
In the 1960s, the family received the agricultural estate of Loreto Aprutino (Pe) consisting of about 50 ha. Here, Giuseppe Ciavolich planted the vineyards of Montepulciano, Trebbiano and Cococciola, which Chiara now carries into the future.
We hope you'll join us for this one-night-only event, steeped in the stories and flavors of Abruzzo.
